Small Backyard Additions That Make A Big Difference

June 27, 2016 - Updated: June 27, 2016

Do you ever feel like your backyard could use some improvements? Are you the kind of person who likes to work smart and not hard, while saving some money in the meantime? Good news! We are about to give you inspiration for your backyard upgrades with clever ideas about how to make your backyard the perfect hang-out spot!

Keep those annoying bugs away!
The first thing to ruin your backyard’s ambiance are mosquitos! Instead of using sprays or candles, you can plant lemongrass as a natural repellant. It contains a natural oil called citronella, which is commonly found in bug repellants. Lemongrass can grow up to 4 ft tall and 3 ft wide.

You can simply buy a mature plant from your local grocery store and plant it in a jar of water placed in a sunny area. When roots develop, just plant it in your garden and voilà!

Enjoy walking barefoot without the mess!

Feeling the grass between your toes is great, no doubt. What is not so great is having mud or dry grass stuck to your feet when you are ready to go inside.

Here is a quick and easy solution! Use an old wooden box or simply nail together 4 wooden planks, fill them with flat stones and you get yourself a feet washing station. All you need is a garden hose! Now you can jump into the swimming pool or put your flip flops on, guilt free!

Not to mention that the warm stones will feel great under your feet!

Make a swing for endless fun!

A simple swing like this could keep your kids entertained for hours, allowing you to take a little vacation in your backyard!

First, you need to make sure that you have a sturdy branch that will be able to support the swing and the weight of the person swinging. The rest is easy!

Find a pine disc cut into a circle at a home improvement or hardware store, or you can cut one yourself if you are up for the task! You could also sand, paint and stain it to your preference. You will need to drill a hole in the middle that is big enough for a rope (at least 1 inch thick) to go through. Once you put the rope through, tie it in a sturdy knot on the bottom. Burn the edges with a lighter to avoid unravelling. Hang the other end over the branch and tie it well.

Make your fire pit more interesting!

Aren’t backyard bonfires just the best? What makes them even better are colourful flames! All you need to do is put in a pouch of fire crystals in the fire to create a magical sight with dark & light blues, purple, red, green and yellow flames!

You can buy a 12-pack for just $10.99 on Amazon!

Use rope lighting to brighten up the yard!

There is a wide variety of affordable rope lighting that can give your backyard a very sophisticated and classy look, at a very low cost.

You can use it to outline your pool, walkways, steps, deck and more! You could also wrap it around tree trunks for a cozy, warm look. You can find rope lights that are waterproof, have an array of colours and even timed lighting so you don’t have to worry about turning the lights on and off!

This one is under $12 for 16.5 ft!
